How to Hire the Ideal Builder

Have you decided to have your home built rather than buying one that is already up? This can be a fun and exciting way to get the home you want. But how do you know which builder to hire? Here are some ways to ensure that you hire a reputable builder to work for you.

Do a Background Check

Look for complaints by past clients who have used the home builders you are considering using. One easy way to do this is to search through the Better Business Bureau. Their website has listings of complaints and other information about most businesses. Experian, the credit reporting agency, also has a service called Contractor Check that you can use to check out various builders for a nominal fee.

Get References

Does the contractor you are considering have a list of references that you can contact to see how satisfied previous customers have been with their workmanship? Most large home builders should be able to provide a list of at least 50 previous customers, any of which you can call to get information on how the builder treated them and about the job they did.

Check out the Models

If there is a model home done by a builder you are considering hiring, check out the model. This will give you a good idea about the quality of the materials and more. Speak with the builder if they are at the model's open house and ask a lot of questions. The builder should be willing and patient to speak with you and answer any question you may have.

Hire a Private Inspector

Before buying a home from a home builder, hire your own inspector to check the home thoroughly for any problems. This will cost around $300 but it is an invaluable thing to do. Search for a reputable inspector by using the North American Directory of Inspectors or some other organization that certifies home inspectors to ensure that your hire a good one.
